Iain Reid (born 1981) is aCanadian writer. Winner of theRBC Taylor Emerging Writer Award in 2015,[2] Reid is the author ofI'm Thinking of Ending Things (2016) andFoe (2018).[3]

Writing career

Reid established his writing career by publishing articles and columns in national magazines and newspapers after graduating fromQueen's University in Kingston, Ontario. He drew theNational Post's attention, garnering a weekly column assignment.[4] In 2015, his work began appearing inThe New Yorker.[4]

Reid's first memoir,One Bird's Choice: A Year in the Life of an Over-educated, Underemployed Twentysomething Who Moves Back Home, was published in 2010,[5] and was followed byThe Truth About Luck: What I Learned on my Road Trip with Grandma in 2013.[6] His debut novel,I'm Thinking of Ending Things, was published in 2016.[7] Academy Award winnerCharlie Kaufman adapted the novel into afilm forNetflix in 2020.[8] Kaufman consulted with Reid while he was preparing the adaptation, and Reid was an executive producer for the film.[9]

Reid's second novel,Foe, was published by Simon and Schuster in 2018.[10]Anonymous Content purchased the book's film rights,[11] and filming began in Australia in January 2022.[12] Reid co-wrote the screenplay with director Garth Davis.[9] Thefilm starsSaoirse Ronan andPaul Mescal, with an expected theatrical release in October 2023[13] before it is available for streaming onAmazon Prime.[9]

Reid's third novel,We Spread, was published by Scout Press in September 2022.[14][15] Reid is writing the screenplay for the film adaptation with directorMinhal Baig.[9] The novel was shortlisted for theGovernor General's Award for English-language fiction at the2023 Governor General's Awards.[16]

Personal life

Reid lives inKingston, Ontario.[4] He is a 2004 graduate ofQueen's University at Kingston, where he studied history and journalism.[17] His father, Hugh Reid, is an English professor at Carleton University. His brother,Ewan Reid, is the Founder and CEO ofMission Control Space Services (Mission Control),[18] As of August 1, 2024[update], his sisterEliza Reid was theFirst Lady of Iceland and his brother-in-law isGuðni Th. Jóhannesson, the formerPresident of Iceland.[3]
