IHS Press is a publishing house based inVirginia whose purpose is to re-popularize the works ofCatholic Social Thought by Catholic authors of the early 20th century.[1]

The name "IHS" is a truncation of the first three letters of theGreek name ofJesus Christ. IHS Press has been concerned with the promotion of the social teaching as laid down by formerPope Leo XIII in his encyclicalRerum novarum.[independent source needed] It has focused on reprinting works of authors who promote a third-way between capitalism and socialism such asG. K. Chesterton andHilaire Belloc, along with those of such olderguild theorists asArthur Penty and Heinrich Pesch.[independent source needed]

IHS Press is chaired byJohn Sharpe.[citation needed] Sharpe was the public affairs officer for theUSS Carl Vinson, an aircraft carrier, when the Navy investigated him in 2007 after reports ofantisemitic activities, according to the SPLC.[2] The Navy reassigned him and reprimanded him for criticisms of PresidentGeorge W. Bush and theIraq War in IHS books he had edited, but not for anti-Semitism, according to the SPLC.[3] The SPLC said Sharpe also ran another hate group, the Legion of St. Louis,[4] and was on the board of the St. George Educational Trust, described as a radical British Catholic group.[2]

In 2005, IHS Press launched an imprint,Light in the Darkness Publications (LID), which publishedNeo-Conned!, a two volume compendium of essays opposing the Iraq War.[independent source needed]
