TheHyundai Terracan is amid-size SUV produced by the South Korean manufacturerHyundai Motor Company from 2001 to 2007. It was kept in production in China, byHawtai Motor Group, until 2011.
The design of the Hyundai Terracan was originally previewed by theHyundai Highland concept[1] and featured a chassis derived from the second generationMitsubishi Pajero.[2] It was powered by one of three engines: a 2.9 liter diesel inline-four Hyundai J engine, a 2.5 liter diesel inline-four licensed from Mitsubishi (4D56), and a 3.5 liter petrol V6Hyundai Sigma engine. The car's name derives fromTarascan, aMesoamerican empire state located in west central Mexico. The Terracan was replaced by theHyundai Veracruz.
Australian specification Terracans were available in three trim levels - base and Highlander. Highlander models came standard with leather seats, climate control air conditioning and an automatic 4WD differential that engaged 4WD on the fly. All models came with low range gearing and a separate ladder frame chassis.[citation needed]
The Terracan has also been built and sold in China from 2003 to 2011 under theHawtai brand in a joint venture withHyundai that lasted up to 2010. Only the facelifted version was available there, and came with the 2.4 liter4G64, a 2.5 liter diesel, 2.9 literJ-Series diesel, or the 3.5 literSigmaV6 engine. Transmission choices were a 5-speed manual or 4 speed automatic.[citation needed]
The Terracan was offered with three engines: a 3.5 litre V6 gasoline, a 2.5 litre diesel licensed from Mitsubishi, and a more fuel-efficient 2.9 litre diesel offered in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
When the Terracan entered its second year the only changes were some additional colors.[3]
2005 brought a light facelift.[citation needed]
