Hypocnemis is a genus ofpasserine birds in the familyThamnophilidae. They are resident breeders intropicalCentral andSouth America.
The genusHypocnemis was introduced by the German ornithologistJean Cabanis in 1847.[2] The name combines theAncient Greek wordshupo "somewhat like" andknēmis "leggings".[3] Thetype species was subsequently designated as theGuianan warbling antbird.[4]

Thewarbling antbird has traditionally been considered a singlepolytypic species, but recent evidence has led to it being split into six almost entirelyparapatric species.[6][7]
