Hydropsalis is agenus ofnightjars in the familyCaprimulgidae. The species are widely distributed across the tropical and subtropical regions of the New World.
The genusHydropsalis was introduced in 1832 by the German naturalistJohann Georg Wagler.[1] Thetype species was designated byGeorge Robert Gray in 1855 asCaprimulgus furciferVieillot 1817.[2][3] This taxon is now considered as asubspecies of thescissor-tailed nightjar (Hydropsalis torquata).[4] The genus name combines theAncient Greekhudro- meaning "water-" withpsalis meaning "pair of scissors".[5]
