TheHungarian men's national ice hockey team is the nationalice hockey team ofHungary. They have participated in the IIHF European Championships, theIIHF World Hockey Championships and theOlympic Games since 1928.[2] A consistent participant of the annual World Championship, Hungary has played at the Olympics three times, most recently in1964. They are currently ranked 19th in the world by theIIHF.

The team is controlled by theHungarian Ice Hockey Federation (Magyar Jégkorong Szövetség). No Hungarian-born players have ever played inNorth America'sNational Hockey League; however, three have been selected in theNHL Entry Draft:Tamás Gröschl by theEdmonton Oilers (1999),Levente Szuper by theCalgary Flames (2000), andJános Vas by theDallas Stars (2002).

History

[edit]
The Hungarian team during the2017 World Championship Division IA tournament in Ukraine.

The Hungarian team won its group in the2008 IIHF World Championship Division I, and therefore qualified to play in the Elite Division of the2009 IIHF World Championship. This is the first time since 1939 that Hungary has qualified to play in the highest division of international hockey. The advance was, however, marred by the sudden death of team captainGábor Ocskay, and the team was eventually relegated to Division I again.

In 2015, Hungary finished second in its group in the2015 IIHF World Championship Division I, behindKazakhstan to gain promotion to the2016 IIHF World Championship.

On 4 May 2024, Hungary beat Slovenia 2-1 on the last match day of the2024 IIHF World Championship Division I and became world chanpions.[3] Consequently, Hungary qualified for the2025 IIHF World Championship.[4]
