AdmiralHumphrey Wykeham BowringCBDSO (18 April 1874 – 21 February 1952) was aRoyal Navy officer who becameCommander-in-Chief, Coast of Scotland.
Born the son of the industrialistJohn Charles Bowring,[1] Bowring joined theRoyal Navy as acadet in 1887,[2] took part in theWitu expedition in 1890[3] and was promoted toLieutenant in 1895.[4] He served inWorld War I asCaptain of thecruiserHMSArrogant and then of the cruiserHMSAurora[5] and acted as Chief of Staff to theCommander-in-Chief, Dover Patrol.[6] After the War he commanded thebattleshipHMSBellerophon and then the battleshipHMSCenturion.[5] He was appointedCommander-in-Chief, Coast of Scotland in 1926 and retired in 1929.[7] He was promoted to fulladmiral on the Retired list on 30 September 1933.[8]
He lived atPlympton inDevon.[9]
In 1924 he married Rose Dalby.[9]
