Hugo González Peña (born 5 February 2006) is a Spanish professionalbasketball player for theBoston Celtics of theNational Basketball Association (NBA).

Early life and career

Born inMadrid, both of González's parents were professional basketball players, which made him start playing at age nine. He has said, "My first basketball memories come from my parents. They played basketball, and they influenced me a bit."[1] He began playing for a local basketball academy inSan Agustín del Guadalix, where he stayed three years.[1]

González joinedReal Madrid's youth team at 9 years of age. He quickly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a part of the junior team and the reserve team in theLiga EBA during the 2022–23 season. González became a star on the 2006 generation roster, which includedIsmaila Diagne,Mitar Bonjakovic, and fellow draft prospectEgor Demin. In 2023, he won theNext Generation Tournament with Real Madrid U18. He won a back-to-back title in 2024, also gathering MVP honours. González scored 23 points and 6 assists in the championship game against PFBB, and averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game over the tournament.[2]

Professional career

Real Madrid (2022–2025)

On 2 October 2022, González made his professional debut withReal Madrid in theLiga ACB againstMonbus Obradoiro.[3] He spent 3:08 minutes on the court, contributing with 4 points and aPIR of 5 in the Real Madrid win. At 16 years, 7 months, and 27 days old, he became the fourth-youngest Real Madrid player to debut in the ACB.[4]

Boston Celtics (2025–present)

On 25 June 2025, González was selected with the 28th overall pick by theBoston Celtics in the2025 NBA draft.[5] González joined the Celtics summer league team for the2025 NBA Summer League held inLas Vegas.

In July 2022, González was part of the2022 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup held inMálaga, where the team secured asilver medal while losing the final to the United States with a score of 67–79.

On 30 July 2023, he won the silver medal in the2023 FIBA U18 European Championship held inNiš, Serbia, losing the final to the host team.[6]

Senior team

On 20 February 2025, González made his debut with theSpain national senior team in which he scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds in a loss toLatvia in theEuroBasket 2025 qualification round.[7][1]
