Ahudo is a temporarypit toilet in a camp, covered with a tarpaulin, not a permanentouthouse. The name is in common use in Dutch and Belgianscouting, and has international usage.
The wordhudo is derived from theUrdu wordhowdah, which is the covered carriage on elephants.[1]
Otherpopular etymological explanations include the acronym ofhoud uw darmen open (theDutch parallel to "kybo", "keep your bowels open"), and thecontraction ofhurkdoos (Dutch for "squat loo"). The validity of these explanations is questioned.[1]
