TheHoward Yard is a CTArail yard in theRogers Park neighborhood on the North Side ofChicago, Illinois, on the border withEvanston, Illinois. It is the largest rail yard of the CTA,[1] and stores cars from theYellow,Red, andPurple Lines of theChicago Transit Authority.
Currently,5000-series railcars are stored here.[2] It is adjacent toHoward station.
The yard was opened in 1919[3] and gradually replaced the functions of Wilson Yard, until the latter was destroyed by fire in 1996.[3] The yard was rebuilt between 1991 and 1993.[4]
A train derailed in the yard in 1990, disrupting rail traffic toEvanston.[5] In 2023, aYellow Line train collided with a CTA snowplow on tracks adjacent to the yard.[6]
