Sint-Lievens-Houtem (Dutch:[sɪntˌlivənsˈɦʌutəm]; French:Hautem-Saint-Liévin, not officially recognized) is aDutch-speakingmunicipality ofBelgium. It is located in theDenderstreek and at the edge of theFlemish Ardennes, the hilly southern part of the province ofEast Flanders (Flemish Region). Sint-Lievens-Houtem is crossed by theMolenbeek in Vlierzele, Zonnegem and Letterhoutem.

It is named afterSaint Livinus (Sint Lieven inDutch), a Christian saint believed to have been buried there.

The town comprises the formermunicipalities ofBavegem,Letterhoutem [nl], Sint-Lievens-Houtem proper,Vlierzele, andZonnegem [nl], and the hamlets ofEspenhoek [nl],Cotthem [nl], and Hoogveld, formerly parts ofOombergen [nl].

Houtem Jaarmarkt

In November every year, Sint-Lievens-Houtem holds a winter fair and livestock market, theHoutem Jaarmarkt, at which hundreds of traders sell cattle and horses. In 2010 it was inscribed on theUNESCORepresentative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.[2]
