Houayxay (Lao:ຫ້ວຍຊາຍ,pronounced[hȕajsáːj];Thai:ห้วยทราย,pronounced[hûajsāːj]) (alsoHuoeisay,Huai Sai,Houei Sai,Huay Xay orHuay Xai) is a district inBokeo Province, Laos, on the border withThailand.
The town lies on theMekong River oppositeChiang Khong in Thailand. TheFourth Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge at Ban Houayxay, which opened in December 2013 and replaced ferry service across the river, is the northernmost road border crossing between the two countries.Asian Highway 3, which runs through Ban Houayxay, extends north toYunnan Province ofChina and south toChiang Rai Province ofThailand.
Houayxay has adomestic airport (HOE) with regular flights toVientiane andLuang Prabang (depending on the season).
The town is the starting point for boats (speed and slow boats, freighters, luxury cruisers for tourists and others) on theMekong River toPakbeng,Luang Prabang and other destinations.[2]
Houayxay is home to theGibbon Experience.[3] It is a series of ziplines and treehouses providing an overnight experience.[4]
