Hou Yanqi (Chinese:侯艳琪; March 1970) is a Chinesediplomat. From 2018 to 2022 she served as theAmbassador to Nepal and from 2022 to 2025 as Ambassador toASEAN.
Hou was born inQingxu County,Taiyuan,Shanxi province, China in 1970.
Hou has served at theMinistry of Foreign Affairs since 1996, prior to being appointed ambassador, she was the deputy director general, focusing onSouth Asian affairs. She has also been stationed in Pakistan and as the consul of theChinese Consulate-General in Los Angeles.[2] From 2018 to 2022 she served as Ambassador to Nepal. On 22 December 2022 she was sworn in as Ambassador to ASEAN.[3] In November 2025, she bid her farewell to theASEAN Secretary General, effectively ending her role.[4] In December 2025 she was appointed director of the Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, succeeding Hong Liang.[5]
She has been noted for her use of Twitter to increase thesoft power of China.[6][7][8][9]
Hou is married and has one son.[1] She speaksUrdu,[10] which she majored atPeking University.[2]
