Hoffman Building, also known asThe Yamato,[1] is a historic building located at 635-637 S.Broadway in theBroadway Theater District in thehistoric core ofdowntown Los Angeles.

History

Hoffman Building, built in 1906, was originally four-stories and currently is one.[2][3] It was originally home to Yamato Inc., aJapanesebazaar that also served tea and cake, and then a Harry Fink & Co. women's clothing store in 1917.[1]

In 1979, theBroadway Theater and Commercial District was added to theNational Register of Historic Places, with Hoffman Building listed as a non-contributing property in the district.[2]

Architecture and design

Hoffman Building is built ofbrick.[2] The building originally featureddisplay windows that flanked its entrance and afire escape on its top two stories,[4] and itsfacade, while updated, was similar to the original as of 1979.[2]
