It lies southeast of the canton, bordering the adjacentSt. Gallen. Hinwil has a population of 97,098 (as of 31 December 2020); its capital is the town ofHinwil, located at the centre of the district.
It was formed in 1831, when the administrative seat was moved to Hinwil fromGrüningen. The district was known asOberamt Grüningen from 1815–1831, which continued the historical bailiwick of Grüningen (1408–1798).
