Thehindgut (orepigaster) is theposterior (caudal) part of thealimentary canal. In mammals, it includes thedistal one third of thetransverse colon and thesplenic flexure, thedescending colon, sigmoid colon and up to the ano-rectal junction. Inzoology, the termhindgut refers also to thececum andascending colon.
Arterial supply is by theinferior mesenteric artery, and venous drainage is to theportal venous system. Lymphatic drainage is to thechyle cistern.
The hindgut is innervated via theinferior mesenteric plexus. Sympathetic innervation is from thelumbar splanchnic nerves (L1-L2), parasympathetic innervation is from S2-S4.
