Hicham El-Mashtoub (Arabic:هشام المشطوب; May 11, 1972 – September 16, 2021) was a Lebanese-Canadiangridiron footballcenter who played two seasons with theHouston Oilers of theNational Football League (NFL). He was selected by the Oilers in the sixth round of the1995 NFL draft after playingcollege football at theUniversity of Arizona. El-Mashtoub also played one season for theEdmonton Eskimos of theCanadian Football League (CFL).
Hicham El-Mashtoub was born on May 11, 1972, inBeirut, Lebanon.[1] He moved to Canada when he was four.[2] He attendedÉcole secondaire Georges-Vanier inLaval, Quebec.[1]
El-Mashtoub was a four-yearletterman for theArizona Wildcats of theUniversity of Arizona from 1991 to 1994.[1] He was named second-teamAll-Pac-10 by the Coaches his senior year in 1994.[3]
El-Mashtoub was selected by theHouston Oilers in the sixth round, with the 174th overall pick, of the1995 NFL draft.[4] He was also selected by theEdmonton Eskimos in the opening bonus round of the1995 CFL draft.[1] He officially signed with the Oilers on July 20, 1995.[5] El-Mashtoub played in two games in 1995 and one game in 1996.[4] He was released on August 27, 1997.[5]
El-Mashtoub signed with theKansas City Chiefs on April 7, 1998.[5] He was released on August 25, 1998.[5]
El-Mashtoub was signed by theCleveland Browns on January 8, 1999, and was later released on April 27, 1999.[5]
El-Mashtoub dressed in all 18 games for theEdmonton Eskimos of theCanadian Football League in 1999.[1]
On September 16, 2021, inMontreal, El-Mashtoub died of cancer at the age of 49.[6][7][1]
