Heteroanser is anextinctgenus ofgeese, which lived during the LateMiocene in what is today WesternMongolia. Its remains were discovered in the upper subformation of the Hyargas Nuur Formation, on the northern shore of theKhyargas Nuur, inUvs Province. This genus is known from a single and incompletetarsometatarsus, which differs significantly from all otherNeogene genera of anatinae.[1]
The holotype remains ofHeteroanser, a fragmental righttarsometatarsus labelledPIN, no. 2614/110, was first described byEvgeny Kurochkin in 1976, as a new species within the genusHeterochen:H. vicinus. In 1986, this new species was transferred to the genusAnser byMlíkovský andŠvec, who considered it related to the modernbean goose. Finally, in 2012, a new genus,Heteroanser, was erected for the species byNikita Zelenkov, making itHeteroanser vicinus.[1]
The name of this genus comes from theGreek adjectiveheteros, meaning "other", and theLatin nounanser, meaning "goose".[1]
