Hermann Oldenberg (31 October 1854 – 18 March 1920) was a German scholar ofIndology, and Professor atKiel (1898) andGöttingen (1908).

Work

Oldenberg was born inHamburg. His 1881 study onBuddhism, entitledBuddha: Sein Leben, seine Lehre, seine Gemeinde, based onPāli texts, popularized Buddhism and has remained continuously in print since its first publication. WithT. W. Rhys Davids, he edited and translated into English three volumes ofTheravadaVinaya texts, two volumes of the (Vedic)Grhyasutras and two volumes ofVedic hymns on his own account, in the monumentalSacred Books of the East series edited byMax Müller. With hisProlegomena (1888), Oldenberg laid the groundwork to the philological study of theRigveda.

In 1919 he became a foreign member of theRoyal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.[1]

He died inGöttingen.
