Herjólfr Bárðarson is one of the primary settlers in theHistory of Greenland.
First he lived inIceland on Drepstokki. He was the son of Bárð Herjólfsson and married to Þorgerður.[1] His sonBjarni Herjúlfsson was the first European sighting theAmerican continent in 986, after getting off course.
Herjólfr was one ofEiríkur rauði's liegemen,[2] who left Iceland with 25Viking ships[3] in 985 to settle Greenland. Of these 25 only 14 made it toGreenland,[4] among them Herjólfr's.
According to the IcelandicLandnámabók, his family settled at Herjólfsfjörð onHerjólfsnes peninsula south ofBrattahlíð, near modernNarsarmijit (Friedrichsthal) south ofNanortalik.
