Henry Roquemore (March 18, 1886 – June 30, 1943)[1] was an Americancharacter actor who primarily playedbit parts. He appeared in 229silent andsound films from 1927 until 1943. Many of his roles were uncredited parts inWestern movies, but he also appeared in major films includingMeet John Doe,The Little Foxes,The Magnificent Ambersons, and theMarx Brothers filmYours for the Asking. He was sometimes credited as Henry Rocquemore.
Born inMarshall, Texas,[1] Roquemore began his career in entertainment by staging localtalent shows, for clubs in his hometown ofMarshall, Texas. His first role inHollywood wasthe Beast in the 1927 silent filmIs Your Daughter Safe? and his last was in 1943'sGirl Crazy. After the making of first sound film in 1927, he specialized in hisfat man roles and was widely sought out by directors, such asFrank Capra andOrson Welles for bit parts; exemplified bythe Match King one ofMae West's suitors in 1935'sGoin' to Town. His more famous roles include;Jouett Goforth in 1931'sCimarron and in 1941'sWoman of the Year as the Justice of the Peace who marriedKatharine Hepburn andSpencer Tracy.[citation needed]
Roquemore was married to actressFern Emmett.[2] He died from aheart attack on June 30, 1943, inBeverly Hills, California, and was interred in theForest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery inGlendale, California.[1]
