Henry Hu Hung-lick (Chinese:胡鴻烈, 26 February 1920 – 27 July 2025) was a barrister and politician inHong Kong who served as the vice-chairman of theReform Club,Legislative Council member, and vice-chairperson of theUrban Council.
Born into a poor family, Hu only received a formal education beginning at the age of 9, but finished all his primary education requirements within 2.5 years, and earned an excellent result in the secondary school admission examination among all students inChekiang. Hu graduated from theNational University of Political Science in 1942 where he studied diplomacy.[1]
In 1945, Hu, along with his wife whom he had just married, went toTashkent,Soviet Union to begin his diplomatic career.[2] Following thechange of regime in China after which theRepublic of China governmentretreated to Taiwan, he decided to study at theUniversity of Paris and received adoctoral degree and adiploma of high studies ininternational law andinternational affairs in 1952. He qualified as abarrister in the UK in 1954, and began his legal practice upon his return to Hong Kong a year later.[1]
Hu, long a patriot of his homeland, eventually gave up being a barrister in Hong Kong, reportedly because of his unwillingness to revoke hisChinese nationality. During his legal practice in Hong Kong, Hu handled some infamous cases, including the Happy Valley cardboard box murder.[3]

Hu was elected to theUrban Council in1965, criticising the government onits fare increase forStar Ferry foot passengers. Hu then was appointed to theLegislative Council in 1976 as an unofficial member, and met Chinese leaderDeng Xiaoping in 1979, becoming the first Hong Kong legislator to enter thePRC. His Legco membership term ended in 1983, and he entered theChinese People's Political Consultative Conference four years later.
Hu was born on 26 February 1920.[4] He married Chung Chi-yung; together they had two children. They co-foundedHong Kong Shue Yan College,[5] which would become the first private university in Hong Kong.
Hu died on 27 July 2025, at the age of 105[6], and a grave was erected atHong Kong Cemetery in honor of him and his wife.
