Henry Carey Baird (September 10, 1825 - December 31, 1912) was a publisher in the United States who was politically active. He wrote and testified on economic issues in the United States. TheNew York Public Library has a folder of his letters.[1] His publishing business was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
He was born at the arsenal inBridesburg, Philadelphia the son of officer Thomas J. Baird and Eliza Carey Baird.Henry Charles Carey was his uncle (mom's brother).[2] He had grandparents that immigrated from Ireland.
He began his career at his uncle Edward L. Carey's publishing firm Carey & Hart for several years before establishing his own in 1849. He left the Republican Party to help found theGreenback Party He helped defeat legislation for a bond issue.[3] His views on it were published in 1876.[4] His writings on the "National Finances" were published in 1877.[5] In 1878 he testified on specie payments.[6] His letters to theNew York Daily News on the "Irish Question" were published.[7]

He was the first commercial publisher in the United States that specialized in industrial texts[10] and he was a publisher into the early 20th century.[11]
