Henochilus wheatlandii is a species ofcharacinendemic toBrazil where native to theMucuri andDoce River basins.[3] It is aCritically Endangered species, and now restricted to theSanto Antônio River, a tributary of the Doce River.[4] It is theonly species in the genusHenochilus.
It is a critically endangered species, and had been considered extinct for more than a century, until rediscovered in 1996.[5] This species is known to feed on plants.[6] It can reach up to 41.3 cm (16.3 in) instandard length.[3]
The fish is named in honor ofHenry Wheatland (1812–1893), who was President of theEssex Institute inSalem, Mass., USA, which published the description of the fish.[7]
