Hemmoor (German pronunciation:[ˈhɛmoːɐ̯]) is a small town in thedistrict of Cuxhaven, inLower Saxony,Germany. It is situated near the riverOste, approx. 40 km northeast ofBremerhaven, and 25 km south ofBrunsbüttel.
Hemmoor belonged to thePrince-Archbishopric of Bremen, established in 1180. In 1648 the Prince-Archbishopric was transformed into theDuchy of Bremen, which was first ruled inpersonal union by the Swedish Crown—interrupted by a Danish occupation (1712–1715)—and from 1715 on by theHanoverian Crown. In 1807 the ephemericKingdom of Westphalia annexed the Duchy, beforeFrance annexed it in 1810. In 1813 the Duchy was restored to theElectorate of Hanover, which—after its upgrade to theKingdom of Hanover in 1814—incorporated the Duchy in areal union and the Ducal territory, including Hemmoor, became part of the newStade Region, established in 1823.

Hemmoor is also the seat of theSamtgemeinde ("collective municipality")Hemmoor.
It is twinned with the small market town ofSwaffham, which is situated in the east of England.
