TheHellespontine Sibyl was the priestess presiding over theApollonianoracle atDardania. The Sibyl is sometimes referred to as theTrojan Sibyl. The wordSibyl comes (viaLatin) from the Ancient Greek wordsibylla, meaningprophetess or oracle. The Hellespontine Sibyl was known, particularly in the late Roman Imperial period and the early Middle Ages, for a claim that she predicted the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.[1] This claim comes from theSibylline Oracles, which are not to be confused with theSibylline Books.

The Hellespontian Sibyl was born in the village ofMarpessos[2] near the small town ofGergis, during the lifetimes ofSolon andCyrus the Great.[3] According toHeraclides of Pontus, Marpessus was formerly within the boundaries of theTroad.[4]

Thesibylline collection atGergis was attributed to the Hellespontine Sibyl and preserved in the temple of Apollo at Gergis. Later, it was passed on toErythrae, where it then became famous.
