Heinsberg (German:[ˈhaɪnsbɛʁk];Limburgish:Hinsberg[ˈɦɪnzˌbæʀ˦(ə)x])[tone?] is a town inNorth Rhine-Westphalia,Germany. It is the seat of thedistrict Heinsberg. It is situated near the border with theNetherlands, on the riverWurm, approx. 20 km north-east ofSittard and 30 km south-west ofMönchengladbach.

Geography

Wassenberg is the town to the north of Heinsberg,Hückelhoven to the east,Waldfeucht andGangelt to the west, andGeilenkirchen to the south. Two rivers flow through Heinsberg, theWurm and theRur. The Wurm flows into the Rur near to Rurkempen, a village of Heinsberg municipality.

Railway

Therailway from Heinsberg toLindern, on theAachen–Mönchengladbach railway, was reopened for passenger traffic in December 2013. Passenger traffic had been suspended in 1980.[3] As of 2015[update], there is an hourly service fromHeinsberg station to Lindern, which continues toAachen Hbf.[4]

The main bus station of Heinsberg is next to the train station. It is served by buses to several towns and villages in the district, includingErkelenz,Geilenkirchen,Wegberg,Gangelt,Waldfeucht andSelfkant-Tüddern. There is one swift bus, the SB 1 from Erkelenz to Geilenkirchen via Heinsberg.

Heinsberg has two exits on the motorwayA46 to Düsseldorf. TheBundesstraße 221 (AlsdorfStraelen) passes through the town.

Heinsberg possesses many elementary schools and kindergartens. The secondary education facilities include ahigh school (Gymnasium). Since 2007 there is a school for disabled persons in the building of the former vocational school (Berufsschule).
