TheHeichal Shlomo (Hebrew:היכל שְׁלֹמֹה,romanized: Heikhal Shlomo,lit. 'Palace of Solomon'; henceHekhal ofSolomon) is a building, which houses asynagogue,Jewish museum andteacher's college, located opposite theLeonardo Plaza Hotel, onKing George Street,Jerusalem,Israel.
The building is the former seat of theChief Rabbinate of Israel until the 1990s. The building also serves as the Jerusalem Campus ofHerzog College for their Masters in Education program,[1] and houses the Jewish Heritage Center and Museum of Jewish Art.
The building was erected between 1953 and 1958, following plans by German-born architect Alexander Friedman.
The building has housed the Jewish Heritage Center and Jewish Art Museum since 1992.
TheRenanim Synagogue was transferred fromPadua together with its 18th-centuryTorah ark andbimah, and decorated with modern stained glass windows. The Entrance Gallery displays temporary exhibitions of Israeli artists. The museum displaying traditional and modern Jewish art in permanent and temporary exhibitions is named in honour ofBritish Jewish philanthropist, SirIsaac Wolfson.
RabbiYitzchok Zev Soloveitchik, the rabbi ofBrisk, strongly discouraged entering the building, saying "every stone there is impure".[2]
In 2009, PopeBenedict XVI paid a courtesy visit to Heichal Shlomo, where he met with the twoChief Rabbis of Jerusalem.[3]
