Hecaterus

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mythical character

InGreek mythology,Hecaterus orHekateros (Ancient Greek: Ἑκάτερος) was a minor god and the father of five daughters (the Hecaterides) by the daughter ofPhoroneus, and through them grandfather of theOreads,Satyrs, andCuretes.[1] His wife was also identified asAnchiale, the mother of a set of sons (theDactyls).[2][3]

His name has been interpreted as referring to thehekateris (ἑκατερίς, a rustic dance which involves quickly moving hands), and himself as a patron or personification of this dance. On the other hand, it has been suggested that the name "Hekateros" (which stands in thegenitive caseἙκατέρου in the original Greek text) could result from corruption of the purported ἑκ Δώρου "ofDorus".[4]
