TheHeart River is a tributary of theMissouri River, approximately 180 miles (290 km) long, in westernNorth Dakota,United States.[1]
The Heart River rises in theprairie country ofBillings County, in theLittle Missouri National Grassland near the south unit ofTheodore Roosevelt National Park. It flows generally eastwardly throughStark County toGladstone, pastBelfield andSouth Heart, through thePatterson Reservoir and pastDickinson.
It is joined by theGreen River atGladstone, and turns east-southeastward intoGrant County, passing throughLake Tschida, which is formed by theHeart Butte Dam. Below this dam, the river turns northeastward intoMorton County, where it joins the Missouri River atMandan.
