Hayley Squires (born 16 April 1988) is an English actress and playwright, best known for her work in theKen Loach filmI, Daniel Blake.[1] Squires has also appeared inCall the Midwife (2012),Southcliffe (2013),Complicit (2013),Blood Cells (2014),A Royal Night Out (2015),Murder (2016),Collateral (2018),Adult Material (2020),The Essex Serpent (2022) andGreat Expectations (2023). Her first play,Vera Vera Vera, was produced by theRoyal Court Theatre in 2012.[2]
I, Daniel Blake won thePalme d'Or at theCannes Film Festival,Best British Film at the 2017 BAFTAs, and was the Audience Award winner at theSan Sebastián International Film Festival. Squires was nominated for theBAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.[3] ForAdult Material, Squires was nominated for theBAFTA Award for Best Actress.[4]
Born inForest Hill,South London, as Hayley McGinty in 1988, Squires grew up with her mother, father and older brother.[5] The family moved to Kent when she was 14. Her mother was a cook at her school and her father managed a video shop.[6]
She trained atRose Bruford College in Sidcup and graduated in 2010 with BA (Hons) Acting alongside best friend and fellow actorDavid Carlyle.[5][7] She has a quote fromA Midsummer Night's Dreamtattooed underneath her left arm; it reads:And though she be but little, she is fierce.[8]
