Haskayne is a small village in the county ofLancashire, England, and on theWest Lancashire Coastal Plain. It is to the north ofDownholland Cross on theA5147 and theLeeds and Liverpool Canal.Local residents are known as skayners.
The village is inDownhollandcivil parish, and forms part of theAughton & Downhollandward, which is represented by threeConservative Party councillors and is part of thedistrict ofWest Lancashire.[1]
The nameHaskayne is ofBrittonic origin.[2] The first element ishesg, meaning "sedge" (Welshhesg,Bretonhesk,Irishseisc; seeHeskin).[2] The second is one of two suffixes, the singularitve-en, or-en meaning "distinguished by...".[2]
