TheHasdingi were one of theVandal peoples of theRoman era. The Vandals wereGermanic peoples, who are believed to have spoken anEast Germanic language, and were first reported during the first centuries of the Roman empire in the area which is nowPoland, eastern Germany, theCzech Republic, andSlovakia.
Famously, the Hasdingi led a successful invasion of RomanNorth Africa, creating a kingdom with its capital atCarthage in what is nowTunisia.
During theMarcomannic wars, the Hasdingi helped the Romans and were able to settle in theCarpathian andPannonian areas which are now in Hungary and Romania. At the end of 406, they participated together withSilingi Vandals andSarmatianAlans in thecrossing of the Rhine. Their kingGodigisel lost his lifein battle against theFranks during the crossing.
After some years inGaul, these peoples moved into theIberian peninsula.
The Hasdingi settled inGallaecia (todayGalicia,Asturias and the north ofPortugal) along with theSuebi in 409 AD and their kingdom was one of the earliestBarbarian territories to be founded before the fall of theWestern Roman Empire.
Gunderic, Godegisel's successor as king of the Hasdingi, lost his kingdom to kingHermeric of the Suebi in 419 duringAsterius campaign in Gallaecia when the Vandals were overwhelmed by an allied force of Suebi andRomans. He fled toBaetica with his army where he became king of theSilingi Vandals and of theAlans.
Gunderic was succeeded by his brotherGaiseric in 428 AD, who subsequently fled from Iberia to North Africa where he established akingdom at Carthage.
