Harry Charles Salusbury Lloyd is an English actor. His performance in theChannel 4 miniseriesThe Fear (2012) earned him aBritish Academy Television Award nomination. He gained prominence through his roles asWill Scarlet in theBBC dramaRobin Hood (2006), Jeremy Baines in theDoctor Who episodes "Human Nature" and "The Family of Blood" (2007), andViserys Targaryen in thefirst season of theHBO seriesGame of Thrones (2011).

Lloyd played Paul Crosley in theWGN seriesManhattan (2014), Peter Quayle in theStarz seriesCounterpart (2017–2019), and Bernard Marx in thePeacock seriesBrave New World (2020). He voiced Viktor in theNetflix animated seriesArcane (2021–2024), Z inXenoblade Chronicles 3 (2022), and Ultima inFinal Fantasy XVI (2023). He also appeared inWolf Hall (2015) onBBC Two, series 1 ofMarcella (2016) onITV, and thethird season of theFX seriesLegion (2019) asCharles Xavier.

Lloyd is also known for his theatre work, earning anOff West End Award nomination. His films includeThe Theory of Everything (2014),Anthropoid (2016), andThe Wife (2017).

Early life and education

Harry Charles Salusbury Lloyd[1][better source needed] was born inLondon, the son of Marion Evelyn (néeDickens), a children's publisher, and Jonathan Lloyd, who heads a literary agency.[2] He is the great-great-great-grandson ofVictorian writerCharles Dickens through his mother, who is the daughter ofPeter Gerald Charles Dickens, and the great-granddaughter of barristerHenry Fielding Dickens.[3] One of his maternal great-grandfathers was Rear-AdmiralHenry Blagrove,[4][5] and another maternal ancestor was composer and pianistIgnaz Moscheles.[6][7]

Lloyd was educated atEton College and, while there, made his television debut at the age of 16 asJames Steerforth in theBBC's 1999 adaptation ofDavid Copperfield oppositeDaniel Radcliffe.[8][9] In 2002, he was cast as young Rivers inGoodbye Mr Chips. He went on to study English atChrist Church, Oxford,[8] where he joined theOxford University Dramatic Society and appeared in several plays, includingKiss of the Spider Woman andThe Comedy of Errors. He toured Japan withThe Comedy of Errors for the society's 2005 summer tour, starring alongsideFelicity Jones.[citation needed]

Career

In 2007, Lloyd made his professional stage debut at the Trafalgar Studios inA Gaggle of Saints, one of three short plays that make upNeil LaBute'sBash, for which he received positive reviews.[10][11][12][13] He played Jeremy Baines, a student whose mind is taken over by a species of aliens called the Family of Blood, in theDoctor Who episodes "Human Nature" and "The Family of Blood". He was suggested as a possible candidate to playthe Doctor whenDavid Tennant left the role.[14]

In 2011, Lloyd appeared asViserys Targaryen in theHBO seriesGame of Thrones.[15][16][17] He also appeared in the BBC comedyTaking The Flak, and as Herbert Pocket inGreat Expectations.[3] He had small roles inJane Eyre andThe Iron Lady, and starred as the son of a gangster inThe Fear, which aired onChannel 4 in December 2012.[18] In 2012, he appeared as Sir Edmund Mortimer in the BBC television filmThe Hollow Crown: Henry IV, Part 1, and he played Ferdinand, The Duke of Calabria, inThe Duchess of Malfi at the Old Vic in London. He took on his first leading role in the feature filmCloser to the Moon, released in 2014. Lloyd also appeared asStephen Hawking's fictionalised roommate Brian in theBest Picture-nominated filmThe Theory of Everything, alongsideAcademy Award winnerEddie Redmayne andAcademy Award nomineeFelicity Jones.[19]

In 2015, Lloyd co-created the web series Supreme Tweeter, in which he stars as a fictionalised version of himself.[20] The following year he playedAdolf Opálka in the epic war filmAnthropoid, also starringJamie Dornan andCillian Murphy. He also appeared in theITV seriesMarcella. He returned to the stage for the productionGood Canary at the Rose Theatre, which was directed byJohn Malkovich in the role of the protagonist. In 2017, he filmed for the role of Peter Quayle in the science fiction thriller seriesCounterpart withJ. K. Simmons, and starred as young Joe Castleman in the filmThe Wife, an adaptation ofthe book byMeg Wolitzer, oppositeGlenn Close andJonathan Pryce (the latter playing the older Joe). In 2019, Lloyd was cast as a youngCharles Xavier in thethird season of theFX seriesLegion, replacingPatrick Stewart andJames McAvoy, both of whom had previously portrayed the character in theX-Men film series, the former having been approached about reprising the role in the series before the creative direction of the series changed.[21] Later that same year, it was announced that Lloyd would be cast in the series regular role as Bernard Marx inBrave New World.[22] In 2021, Lloyd voiced Viktor in theNetflix animatedaction-adventure seriesArcane. In 2022, Lloyd voicedBrian McNally in theAudible original podcast series,The Miranda Obsession[23] and Z in the video gameXenoblade Chronicles 3.[24]
