Harry Joe Enten (born March 1, 1988)[1][2] is an American journalist who is a senior writer and analyst forCNN Politics.[3] He was a senior political writer and analyst for the websiteFiveThirtyEight.[4] According to theColumbia Journalism Review, he is of a new generation ofpolitical journalists, focusing ondata-driven journalism instead of reporting from the campaign trail.[5]
Enten was raised in aJewish family[2][6][7][8] in theRiverdale neighborhood ofThe Bronx,New York City.[5] Enten was introduced to politics as a child when his father, a judge, took him into the polling booth to help pull the levers for elections. He attendedRiverdale Country School. He is the nephew of singer-songwriterNeil Sedaka, who married Enten's aunt.[7]
Enten graduatedmagna cum laude andPhi Beta Kappa fromDartmouth College in 2011. Enten chose to attendDartmouth partially due toNew Hampshire's status as thefirst-in-the-nation primary.[8][9]
Enten began publishing ablog calledMargin of Error, and held an internship atNBC News' political unit inWashington, D.C.[8][5] Prior to working forFiveThirtyEight, Enten was a journalist forThe Guardian.[5][10]
Along withCarl Bialik and Walter Hickey, Enten was one of the first peopleNate Silver hired whenFiveThirtyEight relaunched underESPN.[5][11] He mostly wrote politics articles forFiveThirtyEight, but he occasionally wrote weather pieces. Enten was also one of the co-hosts of theFiveThirtyEight politics podcast,[12] alongside hostJody Avirgan and fellow co-hosts Nate Silver andClare Malone.
He announced on February 5, 2018, that he was leavingFiveThirtyEight to join CNN's politics team as a senior political writer and analyst.[13][14]
From April 2019 to March 2020,Kate Bolduan,John Avlon, and Harry Enten producedThe Forecast Fest podcast about the2020 United States presidential election.[15]
