Harry Clinton Dowda (December 29, 1922 – June 24, 1996) was an American professionalfootballdefensive back in theNational Football League (NFL) for theWashington Redskins andPhiladelphia Eagles. He playedcollege football atWake Forest University.[1] He served three years in theAirborne duringWorld War II, and saw action in theBattle of Bulge andCrossing the Rhine. In 1953, he was married to the late Bette Marable Patterson and had two children.[2]
Harry Dowda was born on December 29, 1922. He attended West Fulton High School inGeorgia andHickory High School inHickory, North Carolina. Dowda played college football atWake Forest University. In 1947, Dowda was drafted into the NFL in the 19th round.[3]
Dowda was selected in the 19th round (168th pick) in the1947 NFL draft as ahalfback. Dowda played for theWashington Redskins from 1949 to 1953. He then played for thePhiladelphia Eagles from 1954 to 1955. In 1953, Dowda intercepted 5 passes and returned them 73 yards, scoring one touchdown.
