Harris Yulin (born November 5, 1937) is an American actor who has appeared in over a hundred film and television series roles, such asScarface (1983),Ghostbusters II (1989),Clear and Present Danger (1994),Looking for Richard (1996),Bean (1997),The Hurricane (1999),Training Day (2001), andFrasier which earned him aPrimetime Emmy Award nomination in 1996.[1]
Yulin was born on November 5, 1937, inLos Angeles,California. He was raised in aJewish home.[citation needed]
Yulin made his New York debut in 1963 inNext Time I'll Sing to You byJames Saunders and continued to work frequently in theater throughout his career.[2]
His Broadway debut came in the 1980sWatch on the Rhine. He returned to Broadway multiple times in productions ofThe Visit,The Diary of Anne Frank,The Price, andHedda Gabler.[3] In 2010, he played Willy Loman inDeath of A Salesman at theGate Theatre inDublin,Ireland.[4]
His first film role was his portrayal ofWyatt Earp inDoc (1971) starringStacy Keach as Doc Holliday. He appeared in theBrian De Palma filmScarface (1983) as corrupt cop Mel Bernstein. In 1989, he played the role of Judge Stephen Wexler inGhostbusters II. He portrayed a corrupt national security advisor in the 1994Harrison Ford thrillerClear and Present Danger. In 1997, he played the role of George Grierson inBean. He appeared as Leon Friedman, a lawyer ofRubin Carter, in the 1999 film,The Hurricane. In 2001, he portrayed Secret Service Agent Sterling inRush Hour 2.
On television, Yulin appeared inStar Trek: Deep Space Nine in the episode "Duet". During the second season of the TV series24, he played theDirector of the National Security Agency, Roger Stanton. He was nominated for a 1996Emmy for his portrayal of crime boss Jerome Belasco in the sitcomFrasier. In the seriesBuffy the Vampire Slayer, he playedQuentin Travers, head of theWatchers' Council. Yulin also appeared in Season 3 ofEntourage in the episode "Return of the King" as studio head Arthur Gadoff. In 2009, he performed inThe People Speak, a documentary feature film that uses dramatic and musical performances of the letters, diaries, and speeches of everyday Americans, based on historianHoward Zinn'sA People's History of the United States.[5][6] In 2010 he appeared in the AMC seriesRubicon. In 2017 to 2018 he played in 12 episodes ofOzark.[7]
Yulin won the Lucille Lortel Award for directingThe Trip to Bountiful at the Signature Theatre in New York withLois Smith.[8]
Film critic Jim Emerson once quipped that Yulin "should be in every movie ever made".[9]
Yulin datedFaye Dunaway from 1971 to 1972.[10] He was married to actressGwen Welles until her death in 1993. His second marriage was to Kristen Lowman.[11]
