Harriet A. Holman is an American politician serving as a member of theSouth Carolina House of Representatives representing the 102nd District since 2024. Upon her election, she became the first BlackRepublican woman to serve in theSouth Carolina General Assembly.[1]
Holman was born inMobile, Alabama. She graduated fromCentral Texas College with anAssociate of Arts,Jackson State University with aBachelor of Arts, andClaflin University with aMaster of Science.[2]
Holman was attendingWiley College when she decided to join the military, following in the footsteps of her father and older brothers. She started her military career in August 1980; her first duty station wasFort Campbell, Kentucky, with the101st Airborne Division, where she was astill photographer. She re-entered service after university and retired as aUnited States Army Lieutenant Colonel.[3][4]
She earned aDefense Meritorious Service Medal,Meritorious Service Medal (6th award),Army Commendation Medal (3rd award),Army Achievement Medal,National Defense Service Medal (2nd)Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal,Global War on Terrorism Service Medal,Korean Defense Service Medal,Army Service Ribbon, and anOverseas Service Ribbon (2nd award).[2]
Holman served onDorchester County Council as a Democrat before switching affiliation to the Republican Party in 2022.[5][6] She was appointed to fill the vacant district one seat in 2018 by GovernorHenry McMaster.[7] Holman defeated a rival to win the Republican primary for her Council District seat.[8]
On February 19, 2024, Holman announced her bid to challenge Democratic incumbentJoseph H. Jefferson for South Carolina House Seat District 102.[9]
Holman defeated Jefferson to win the general election.[10][11][12]
Holman married her husband Herman in 2009, they have three children. In 2019, Holman's son, Tonie Jackson Jr., died in a fire that destroyed the family home.[13] She resides inRidgeville, South Carolina and attends the Shady GroveUnited Methodist Church.[2]
