Sanganabhatla Harish Shankar (born 31 March 1977) is an Indian film director and screenwriter known for his works exclusively inTelugu cinema, andTelugu theater.[2][3] He made his directorial debut withShock (2006), produced byRam Gopal Varma.[4]

He has directedMirapakay (2011),Gabbar Singh (2012); for which he received theSIIMA Award for Best Director, andCineMAA Award for Best Director. Gabbar Singh grossed150 crore (US$18 million) worldwide, becoming one of the highest grossing Telugu films at the time.[5]Ramayya Vasthavayya (2013) grossed a worldwide share of309 million (US$3.7 million)[citation needed] andDJ: Duvvada Jagannadham (2017) grossed150 crore,[6] both of which were directed by him.

Early life

Harish Shankar was born inDharmapuri,Telangana into aTelugu Brahmin family and was brought up inBHEL Township, Hyderabad.[7] He has a younger brother, Vishnu Prasad, and a younger sister. He studied atOsmania University.[3][4][8]

Film craft

Shankar started stage acting withSeeta Nilayam andLalitha kala Mandiram, based inTelangana. He then began writing and screenwriting.[9] He is influenced byYandamuri Veerendranath's works and is interested in dialects, regional and linguistic influences.[citation needed] He was associated withKona Venkat,Puri Jagannadh,Ram Gopal Varma, and has worked as an associate director for films such asNinne Istapaddanu andVeede.[9]
