Harbans Mukhia (born 1939) is an Indian political historian[1] whose principal area of study ismedieval India.[2]

He received his Bachelors in Arts (BA) in history in 1958 fromKirori Mal College,Delhi University and then earned hisdoctorate from Department of History, Delhi University in 1969. Mukhia worked atJawaharlal Nehru University (JNU),New Delhi as Professor of Medieval History at the Centre for Historical Studies. He was rector of JNU from 1999 to 2002 and retired in February 2004.[citation needed].
I was a Marxist in the 1960s, 1970s, and was even part of the Communist Party of India. I never became anti-Marxist.
