Hara Hara Mahadeva (Sanskrit:हर हर महादेव,romanizedhara hara mahādēva) is aSanskrit invocation in praise of theHindu deityShiva.[1][2] The invocation consists of two epithets of Shiva,hara andmahadeva. It is generally chanted by adherents during auspicious occasions, such as prayer and entering a Shiva temple.[3]

The invocation was chanted by the legendary queenPadmini and tens of thousands of women when they performed the practice ofjauhar to save their honour fromAlauddin Khalji.[4] It was also used as a war cry of the soldiers and kings of the Maratha empire.
