Thomale played as adefensive midfielder anddefender for1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig andBSG Stahl Riesa in theDDR-Oberliga.[1]

Thomale has been the manager and sporting director for former club 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig.[2] He also managedChinese Jia-B League clubChengdu Wuniu in 1998.[3]
