Hanham is in theunitary authority ofSouth Gloucestershire, adjacent to, but not within the City of Bristol. It became acivil parish on 1 April 2003.

Tom Cribb, once world championbare-knuckleboxer, was born in Hanham.[4]Stephen Merchant was also born in Hanham.[5]
Hanham is also the first place in the UK to trialGordon Brown's new eco-towns.[6] Built on the formerHanham Hall Hospital site,[7] the new village serves as a blueprint for Gordon Brown's proposed five eco-towns that will provide up to 100,000 zero-carbon dwellings across the country.[8]
The Blue Bowl has been claimed to be one of the oldest public houses in the country.[9]
