The city was once known as "Bear Creek" or "Bear Creek Station", named after a creek that runs through the area.[4] The town was moved, established and renamed in 1873 when theCentral Railroad of Georgia was built approx. one mile to the east. It was named after Brig. GeneralWade Hampton, an American soldier in theRevolutionary War andWar of 1812. Hampton's historical origins date back to the early 1820s, when the first white settlers arrived in the Bear Creek area.[5]
U.S. Route 19/41, a four-lane highway, runs through the western side of the city, leading north 28 miles (45 km) to downtownAtlanta and south 11 miles (18 km) toGriffin.Georgia State Route 20 runs east from US 19/41 through the southern part of Hampton, leading 7 miles (11 km) toInterstate 75 and 10 miles (16 km) toMcDonough.
According to theUnited States Census Bureau, Hampton has a total area of 5.7 square miles (14.7 km2), of which 5.6 square miles (14.5 km2) are land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2), or 0.86%, are water.[7]
