Halar (Haalaar) is ahistorical region of westernIndia, located by theGulf of Kutch coast on the northwestern area ofNawanagar, now Jamnagar, inGujarat State, onSaurashtra peninsula, roughly corresponding to the presentJamnagar District,Devbhumi Dwarka district,Morbi District andRajkot District.

In 1901 it had an area of 19,365 km2 and a population of 764,992 inhabitants.

History

The name is derived from Jam SriHalaji Jadeja who is supposed to be the 9th-generation grandfather of Jam SriRawalji Lakhaji Jadeja (who is the founder of the region and the first king to reign in the region); Halar was first established with this name by Jam ShriRawalji Lakhaji, aJadejaRajput, in 1540.[1]

During theBritish Raj Halar region was the western of the fourprants or historical districts ofKathiawar, belonging to theBombay Presidency, the others beingGohelwar (southeast),Jhalawarprant(north) andSorath (southwest).

At that time the region included numerousprincely states belonging to theKathiawar Agency, mostly ruled byJadejaRajputs.[2]

    • Gondal, title Maharaja, Hereditary salute of 11-guns
    • Morvi, title Maharaja, Hereditary salute of 11-guns

    • Dhrol, title Thakore Sahib, Hereditary salute of 9-guns
    • Rajkot, title Thakore Sahib, Hereditary salute of 9-guns
