Hachimanyama Castle (八幡山城,Hachimanyama-jō) was acastle inŌmihachiman,Japan, on the eastern shore ofLake Biwa inShiga prefecture. It was the home castle ofToyotomi Hidetsugu, the nephew ofToyotomi Hideyoshi.[1][2]

History

Hachimanyama Castle was built byToyotomi Hidetsugu in 1585 under orders fromToyotomi Hideyoshi.[3]Azuchi Castle's materials were used in the construction of the castle, and Azuchi city's functions were moved to Hachiman city.[3][2] In 1595,Kyōgoku Takatsugu moved toŌtsu Castle and Hachimanyama Castle was abandoned.[3]

Current state

Hachimanyama castle is now in ruins, with some extant stone walls and wet moat. The Buddhist temple Zuiryuji now occupies the formerhonmaru, or mainbailey. Hachimanyama Ropeway provides services between the mountaintop and Himure Hachimangū.[4]  The castle was listed as one of theContinued Top 100 Japanese Castles in 2017.[5]
