Haaz Sleiman (/ˈhɑːzˈslmən/;Arabic:هاز سليمان; born 1 July 1976) is a Lebanese actor.[1] He most notably played the role of Tarek in the 2007 filmThe Visitor for which he was nominated for theIndependent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male and the role of Jesus in the American TV mini-seriesKilling Jesus, in addition to a number of American TV series.

Early life

Sleiman was born in theUnited Arab Emirates (UAE) and raised inBeirut, Lebanon.[2] He immigrated to the United States when he was twenty-one years old.[3]

Career

In 2006, Sleiman portrayed an American soldier inIraq on theNBC seriesER and, that same year, had a recurring role as an Arab billionaire in theCBS seriesCompany Town.[4][5] He portrayed the terrorist suspect Heydar in three 2007 episodes of theFOX series24[5] and appeared on bothNCIS andVeronica Mars in 2007.[4]

He co-starred as Tarek, an undocumentedSyrian immigrant in the critically acclaimed 2007independent filmThe Visitor, a drama directed byTom McCarthy. The film was nominated for aScreen Actors Guild Award and anAcademy Award.[1][4] Sleiman also had small roles in the 2006 filmAmerican Dreamz and the 2007 filmAmericanEast.[4][5]

Sleiman played nurse Mohammed "Mo-Mo" De La Cruz in the first season of theShowtimedark comedy seriesNurse Jackie, which premiered in June 2009.[4][6][7][8]

In 2011, Sleiman played the role of Omar, aPalestinian activist, in theChannel 4 mini-seriesThe Promise.

Sleiman also played the role of Kasim Tariq in theCW Network TV showNikita; he appeared in two episodes.

Sleiman played Dr Rabia, a Syrian doctor inChannel 4'sThe State.

In 2013, Sleiman started as the titular character in the short lived Off-Broadway musicalVenice.[9]

Personal life

In an interview with theChristian Broadcasting Network, Sleiman said that he is Muslim, Christian, and Jewish.[10] On 22 August 2017, hecame out asgay via a Facebook video.[2][11][non-primary source needed]
