HNLMS Urania was atraining ship of theRoyal Netherlands Navy.[1] She was built in theDutch East Indies and was a gift from thebourgeoisie of the colony.[2] During theSecond World War the ship was captured by theJapanese.[3]
Urania was built at the Marine Etablissement te Soerabaja in theDutch East Indies.[1] The ship was a gift from thebourgeoisie of the colony to the recently establishedKoninklijke Instituut voor de Marine inSoerabaja.[2] She was used as training ship by theRoyal Netherlands Navy to trainmidshipman in the Dutch East Indies between 1941 and 1942.[3][4]
After being taken into service in 1941Urania was used to trainmidshipman (Dutch: Adelborst) inSoerabaja.[3][1] On 8 March 1942 the ship sailed, with Dutch navy personnel aboard, from Soerabaja to Australia.[4] However, before she could reach her destinationUrania was stopped and detained by a Japanese destroyer in theMadura Strait.[1] On 10 March 1942 the ship was handed over to a Japanese troopship atToeban and arrived on 16 March 1942 at Soerabaja.[4] Her fate after arriving at Soerabaja remains unknown.[1][3]
