HMSAnguilla (K500) was aColony-classfrigate of theUnited Kingdom in commission from 1943 to 1946 that served duringWorld War II. She originally was ordered by theUnited States Navy as theTacoma-class patrol frigateUSSHallowell (PF-72), later renamedUSSMachias (PF-72), and was transferred prior to completion.
The ship, originally designated a "patrolgunboat,"PG-180, was ordered by theUnited States Maritime Commission under aUnited States Navy contract as USSHallowell.Laid down by theWalsh-Kaiser Company atProvidence, Rhode Island, on 1 April 1943,Hallowell was reclassified as a "patrol frigate," PF-72, on 15 April 1943 and renamed USSMachias on 5 May 1943. Intended for transfer to the United Kingdom, the ship was renamedAnguilla by the British on 10 June 1943 andlaunched on 14 July 1943, sponsored by Mrs. John S. MacDonald.
Transferred to the United Kingdom underLend-Lease on 15 October 1943, the ship served in theRoyal Navy as HMSAnguilla (K500) on patrol and escort duty until 1946. On 29 April 1945, while escortingConvoy RA 66 outbound from theSoviet port ofMurmansk, she joined the frigatesHMS Loch Insh andHMS Cotton in sinking the GermansubmarineU-286 in theBarents Sea north of Murmansk at69°29′00″N033°37′00″E / 69.48333°N 33.61667°E /69.48333; 33.61667 (U=286 sunk).[2] The following day,Anguilla was forced to sink with gunfire the British frigateHMS Goodall, whichU-286 had heavily damaged.[3]
The United Kingdom returnedAnguilla to the United States on 31 May 1946. She was sold to Pro-Industry Products ofNew York City on 13 June 1947 for scrapping.
