The origins of HMD Motorsports traces back toBN Racing's Indy Lights operation as the team had entered the2019 Indy Lights series.[8]David Malukas ran for the team in 2019 with a limited budget.[9]Toby Sowery won the Sunday race at Portland for HMD Motorsports/Team Pelfrey.[10][11] During the season, theBN Racing Indy Lights team was bought out by Henry Malukas.[12][non-primary source needed] This led to the creation of HMD Motorsports while BN Racing continued to be a separate entity. HMD was to run the2020 Indy Lights series, but the season was cancelled due toCOVID-19.[6][13]
HMD Motorsports, together withGlobal Racing Group fielded four cars to start the2021 Indy Lights series season.[2][3][14] Drivers includedBenjamin Pedersen,Linus Lundqvist,Nikita Lastochkin, andDavid Malukas.Exclusive Autosport, due to delaying its planned Indy Lights entry, sold their two cars to HMD/GRG.[15] Linus Lundqvist won Race 1 from pole at the Indy Lights Grand Prix of Alabama with teammate David Malukas winning Race 2 from pole.[16][17] Malukas won Race 2 from pole at the Indy Lights Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.[18] Lundqvist won the Indy Lights Grand Prix of Indianapolis Race 1 from pole with teammate Malukas winning Race 2 from pole.[19][20] Malukas won Race 2 at Road America, both races at Gateway, and Portland Race 1.[21][22][23] Lundqvist would use another car at Gateway due to a crash before the races.[22]Manuel Sulaimán joined the team at Portland, replacing Lastochkin.[24] Lundqvist won the season finale at Mid-Ohio.[25]
HMD partnered withDale Coyne Racing for the2022 Indy Lights series season. Drivers includedChristian Bogle,Danial Frost,Linus Lundqvist, andManuel Sulaimán.[26][27] The teams partnership continued with Global Racing Group, fielding driverBenjamin Pedersen.[26] Lundqvist won several races throughout the season, while teammate Frost won at the Indy Lights Grand Prix of Indianapolis Race 1.[28][29] Sulaimán would leave the team and be replaced byAntonio Serravalle starting at Indianapolis.[30]Kyffin Simpson would join the team starting at Iowa, moving over from TJ Speed.[31] Serravalle would leave and be replaced byJames Roe starting at Nashville, who also moved over from TJ Speed.[32] Pedersen would win at Portland.[33]Nolan Siegel joined the team for the season finale at Laguna Seca[34] Lundqvist would win the series championship at Race 1 of Laguna Seca.[35]
HMD Motorsports fielded an entry for Force Indy driverErnie Francis Jr.[36] HMD also took over the teams equipment and personal.[37] The team started 2023 with nine cars in the Indy NXT field.[38]Christian Rasmussen won the championship racing for HMD.[39] Rasmussen almost ran out of funding three times during the season.[40]
Myles Rowe joined Force Indy/HMD for 2024.[36][41] HMD started 2024 with ten cars in the Indy NXT field.[42] Nolan Siegel did not race at Road America due to being needed by IndyCar Series teamJuncos Hollinger Racing as a replacement driver, withKiko Porto taking his place for the weekend.[43] Siegel then left the team to compete in the2024 IndyCar Series forArrow McLaren.[44]Caio Collet won in his rookie season at Mid-Ohio, and later would be series rookie of the year.[45][46]Christian Brooks joined the team starting at Laguna Seca.[43]Nolan Allaer ended his season in July to focus on 2025.[47]
In July 2025, HMD Motorsports andUSF Pro 200 team TJ Speed Motorsports announced they had joined forces to field three entries in the2026 season of theFormula Regional Oceania Trophy.[57] The three entries will compete asHMD Motorsports with TJ Speed.
In September 2025, HMD Motorsports announced a partnership withIntersport Racing to field anOreca 07LMP2 car in theIMSA SportsCar Championship. Though the car will be fielded under the Intersport Racing name, it will be based at HMD Motorsport's facility in Brownsburg.[58] In November 2025, the team announced its drivers for 2026 would be Intersport Racing's founder Jon Field,Oliver Jarvis,Job van Uitert, andSeth Lucas.[59]
